RESOURCES

Make Saving a Habit:
Save Every Month...Every Week...Every Day

Do just one or two of these things and watch your savings grow!

Monthly
Talk to your employer about contributing to a corporate group plan. They can deduct your specified amount from your paycheck. You won’t miss what you never had.

Saving 10% of your income can be such a stretch that some people give up before they’ve begun. Why not start the first month by setting aside 5%. Try bumping it up another percent every other month and before you know it you’ll be saving 10% of your income. Your savings goals are a bit like exercise, its good to push a little harder each month.

Weekly
Walking or riding your bike to work just one day each week will free up some bus fare or parking coins that you can toss into your piggy bank for a rainy day.

Challenge four coworkers to Super Soup Mondays. Soups are cheap, easy to make and people love showing off what they can do with chicken stock and a few herbs. Each Monday, one of you brings in a creation to share with the group. That means 4 Mondays in a row you get a free lunch and that translates into up to $10 each week in savings.

Daily
Enough with the latte and croissant breakfasts! Your wallet and your heart will thank you. A $6 box of cereal will last you at least 2 weeks. And even if you splurge on a $15 bag of coffee beans it will last about the same. That works out to about $1.50 a day for breakfast. Now, do you want Starbucks or your bucks!

Daily reinforcements help a lot. Write in a journal. Talk to a friend. Find a creative way to remind yourself each day of your goals and the work you are doing to achieve them. Reminding yourself daily about your dream, and your efforts, is a great motivation to keep on saving.
